Frequently Asked Questions

What are the signs that a strut needs replacing?

Look for a hatch that drops, needs hand support or opens unevenly from one side. Oil around the shaft, bent parts, damaged end fittings or a jerky movement can also point to wear. Gas struts lose pressure as they age, so a unit may look normal but no longer provide enough support. Inspect the hinges and brackets too, since damage there can cause similar problems.

Should I replace both struts at the same time?

Replacing both is usually the better choice when a hatch uses a matched pair. An older unit can lose pressure over time, so pairing it with a new one may place more load on one side. Two matching units give you more even support and help reduce twisting through the hatch, hinges and mounting brackets during opening and closing.

Which way should the shaft face?

In most applications, fit the strut with the shaft pointing down when the hatch is closed. This helps keep the internal seal lubricated and can support longer service life. Your original mounting layout should guide the replacement, since some exterior panels use different angles or bracket positions. Check that the body and shaft have room to move through the full opening path.

Can I reuse the existing brackets and end fittings?

You may be able to reuse them if they are undamaged and match the new strut’s end fittings. Check ball stud size, thread type, bracket angle and available movement before fitting gas struts to old hardware. Replace bent, loose or cracked mounts instead of forcing a new unit into place. The strut should move through its full arc without rubbing the panel or nearby parts.
