Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a 40mm and 50mm receiver?

The measurement refers to the receiver opening and the matching square shank. A 40mm accessory will not fit a 50mm opening correctly without a suitable adaptor, and a 50mm shank cannot fit into a 40mm receiver. When comparing trailer tow receivers, check the inside opening, pin position and rated capacity. Do not assume two parts match because they use a similar hitch pin.

When should I use a receiver adaptor or extender?

Use an adaptor to join compatible parts with different receiver sizes or formats. An extender can add clearance for a tailgate, spare wheel or mounted carrier. Both parts change the distance and forces acting on the hitch, which may reduce the usable rating. Check the rating of every component and follow the lowest limit in the full setup before attaching a trailer or carrier.

How do I check the towing capacity of a receiver setup?

Read the rating on the towbar, receiver, ball mount, tow ball, coupling and any adaptor in between. The lowest rated component sets the limit for the whole connection. Trailer tow receivers also need suitable mounting points and fasteners. Compare the vehicle manufacturer’s towing limits and towball download limits, since a high receiver rating does not increase what the vehicle itself can tow.

How can I reduce movement in the receiver?

First check that the shank size, hitch pin and receiver opening match. A suitable anti-rattle device can reduce movement in some carrier and ball mount setups, but it does not repair worn holes or damaged parts. Keep the opening protected with a receiver cover when it is not in use, and inspect the pin, clip and mounting hardware before each towing trip.
