Trailer Tow Balls

Choose trailer tow balls for common 50mm couplings or higher-capacity 70mm setups, with rated options for different towing needs. Total Trailer Parts also carries useful accessories such as ball covers and receiver covers to protect exposed fittings when they are not being used. Check the ball diameter, shank size, thread and load rating as one set of measurements. The tow ball must also suit the coupling and ball mount.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I check the correct tow ball rating?

Read the stamped rating on the ball, then compare it with the trailer’s loaded weight and every other part in the towing connection. Trailer tow balls must work within the lowest rating of the coupling, ball mount, receiver, towbar and vehicle. A larger ball diameter does not automatically approve a higher load. Replace any ball with missing or unreadable rating marks.

What shank measurements should I check?

Check the shank diameter, threaded length and available space through the ball mount. The shoulder must seat correctly against the mount, and the nut needs enough thread engagement. Also confirm that the hole in the ball mount matches the tow ball specification. Using washers or bushes that were not designed for the setup can affect how the ball clamps to the mount.

When is a high-rise tow ball useful?

A high-rise design changes the ball height without replacing the full ball mount. It may help align a specific coupling or provide the clearance required by certain stabilising couplings. Measure the current ride height before choosing one, and check the product notes for any required retention plate. Do not use added height to cover up a ball mount that is badly mismatched to the trailer.

How often should I inspect or replace a tow ball?

Inspect trailer tow balls for a loose nut, damaged thread, heavy wear, corrosion or changes to the ball shape. Check the mount around the hole as well. Replace the ball if it is damaged or no longer matches the coupling correctly. When the vehicle is not towing, a ball cover can reduce contact with grease and protect the exposed surface from road dirt and weather.
